Laura Heien, director of championship administration for GAP, and Austin Ebersole, course manager for American Classic Golf Club near Midway, will join others in the fundraiser that supports the Youth on Course organization.
YOC subsidizes junior golfers playing at participating golf courses throughout the United States. Cape Region clubs working with YOC include American Classic and Mulligan’s Pointe in Georgetown.
Heien, Ebersole and the others will play the DuPont Country Club’s Montchanin course for this year’s challenge.

Golfzon adds new product
Golf simulator businesses made up an increasing percentage of the floor space at the 2023 PGA Show compared to prior shows. That is a sign of the continuing growth of this part of the golf market.
I met with James McDonald and John O’Malley of Golfzon, executives with the Chantilly, Va.-based company, to discuss its new Wave system.
The portable device uses radar to track ball flight like other Doppler-based monitors. The data is uploaded to the user’s Wave Skills app for analysis. It can be used at driving ranges or as a part of an indoor setup. When used as a simulator, it also includes access to more than 100 virtual golf courses.
A new putting mat accompanies the Wave device. The mat has two short walls running parallel to the intended putting path. Infrared detectors embedded within those walls track the putt’s progress and produce an accurate representation of the ball’s progress. “It’s a differentiator,” O’Malley said.
The mat solves one of the nagging issues with past simulators, where the limitations of the designs forced most of them to grant gimmes once the ball reached a defined distance from the virtual hole.

New fundraiser
The Italian American Heritage Club of Sussex County Foundation will hold its inaugural golf outing Friday, Oct. 13, at Mulligan’s Pointe.
Proceeds will provide college scholarships to local high school seniors and school supplies for elementary school children, and support local nonprofits such as the Cape Henlopen Food Basket and Home of the Brave.
Check-in for the scramble format event begins at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start an hour later. Post-round activities include an Italian lunch, awards, prizes and a 50/50.
Entry fees are discounted for IAHC members, and there is added discount for foursomes registering together. Non-golfer lunch tickets are also available.
A wide range of sponsorships remain available.

Goober tournament
Playing spots and sponsorships remain available for the Goober Golf Tournament, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 16, at Stenger’s Shamrock Par 3 on Saw Mill Road near Milton.
Proceeds support youth in sports and the Shepherd’s Office.
Check-in is at 7:30 a.m. for the 8 a.m. shotgun scramble start, with a $90 entry fee per foursome. Registration can be made onsite or online. Event and hole sponsorships can be arranged at goober.golf/sponsor.
Senior Amateurs
While the winners of this year’s Delaware Senior Amateurs were upstaters, the Cape Region provided much of the competitive field in both categories.
Ron Jamarowicz of DuPont Country Club won the men’s side on his home course Aug. 29, with Nicoll Keeney of Wilmington CC taking the women’s title.
Lee Ann Wortmann of Kings Creek finished fourth in the women’s contest, with Paul Dillon of Cripple Creek leading the downstate men’s contingent in third place.
The other Cape Region women who competed were also from Kings Creek, including Lisa Powell, Lisa Schofield, Deb Ward and Marjorie Adis.
The downstate men’s contingent included Andrew MacLean (Bayside Resort), Stan Zabytko (Mulligan’s Pointe), Scott Kimmel (Mulligan’s Pointe), Michael Polise (Peninsula G&CC), Jim Grigsby (Bear Trap Dunes), Joe Angle (Bayside Resort), Steve Morgan (Cripple Creek) and Michael Tremi (Bayside Resort).
Herndon’s Emerald Ace
Congratulations to Kings Creek Country Club member Diane Herndon for her ninth hole in one, made Aug. 28 with an 8-iron on the 133-yard seventh hole at Portmarnock Golf Club in Dublin, Ireland. She was rewarded with the hole’s flag and the opportunity to ring the club’s bell.
The only thing she missed was the chance to hold up a copy of the Cape Gazette for her photo.

Local club competition results
The Mulligan’s Pointe Ladies 18-Hole group played a scramble game Sept. 5.
Ann Reid, Karen Feuchtenberger, Susan Gatcomb and Jackie Chenuta won, with Maxine Ansbach, Peggy Claussen, Gail Logullo and Susan Shockley taking second.
The Kings Creek CC Ladies 18-Hole group played a 1 best ball of 4 game Aug. 31, won by Jean Chlastawa, Leslie McClintick, Mellisa Soper and Margie Moore.
Mena Colucci, Candy Robinson, Ruth Lauver and Nathalie McGregor finished second, with Lori Griggs, Linda Kelleher, Sue Griesemer and Gail Letts in third.
