Cape soccer defeats Appo on Benjamin PK

Vikings move to 3-0
September 23, 2023

The Vikings and the Jags played tough, physical, hard-nosed soccer with end-to-end action for 97 minutes, but junior Cardin Benjamin ended the standoff when he buried a penalty kick in the back of the net after a foul by Appo in its own penalty area.

The Vikings outshot the Jags 8-3 and held a 7-5 edge in corners.

Cape keeper Jake Hutchison made five saves, while Appo keeper Riley Buzby made seven stops.

“Appo is a very strong and physical team,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “They are very athletic, one of the better teams we will face in the regular season. They’re off to a slow start, but will certainly pick up steam as this season continues. We are thrilled with the win, as I believe it is the first one in school history against Appo. I am so proud of our guys. They went out in the early season and earned a signature win. [We’re] proud of Jake Hutchison, as he made some very strong saves for us and earned his first clean sheet of the season. Cardin Benjamin put himself in multiple scoring opportunities and it paid off in the end, as he earned the penalty kick that he buried and won the game for us.”

The Vikings travel to Laurel Tuesday, Sept. 26, to face the 0-5 Bulldogs.
