Bucs lose first game of season; will face unbeaten Smyrna on Tuesday
September 29, 2023

Cape hockey pushed the visiting Milford Bucs into the one-loss category with a 6-2 victory Sept. 28 at Champions Stadium.

Cape outshot Milford 25-4 with a 13-2 advantage in corners.

“The game was won in the midfield,” said coach Kate Austin. “But we should not give up two goals on four shots. I'm not happy about that.”

A statistical oddity in the game was that four of eight goals scored were posted with under a minute left on the scoreboard clock.

Cape was leading 2-0 in the first period on goals from Lulu Rishko (Hannah Maney assist) at 11:17 and Lexi Nowakowski (Atia Sabbagh) at 7:09, then was awarded a corner with 1 second left in the period.

Sabbagh scored on an assist from Maney with no time on the clock for a 3-0 first-period lead.

Erin Dunlap scored off a corner for Milford at 2:35 left in the second quarter. That was answered by Cape’s Avary Miller, who scored on a backhander with 14 seconds left in the period.

Milford goalie Madison Stahl was playing well and standing up to Cape’s barrage of shots, notching a career-best 16 saves.

The halftime score of 4-1 was increased to 5-1 with a third-quarter goal by Devon DeGregory off a corner with an assist from Maney.

All was quiet on the fourth-quarter scoreboard except for time elapsing, until Milford’s Hannah Zimmerman broke away and went to the backhand to score a goal with 39 seconds left. Then with 14 seconds left on the clock, Regan Best scored off an assist from Grace Wiggins for the 6-2 final.

Cape improved to 6-1 and will next play at 3-2 Tower Hill Saturday, Sept. 30.

Updates - Cape won 4-0 at Tower Hill Sept. 30, behind a three-goal hat trick from Addy Basile and a single goal from Hannah Maney. Cape outshot the Hillers 34-2 with a 17-2 advantage in corners. Tower Hill senior goalie Therese Lucian was credited with 24 saves. Cape will play at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Caesar Rodney.

Milford will play Tuesday, Oct. 3, at unbeaten Smyrna.
