If the “Mighty Ducks” taught the sports world anything, it’s that ducks fly together. When the Fighting Mallards of Worcester Prep made the trip north to face Delmarva Christian on the soccer pitch Oct. 2, they may not have flown together, but it sure seemed like they were soaring.
The Royals were playing their second game in three days, and the physicality of the Sept. 30 Seaford game may have been a factor in the second half. The Mallards opened up the scoring early in the first half and cultivated a 3-0 lead before Delmarva Christian got meaningful touches in the box. Sharp passing, timely runs and a disciplined back line were big reasons for the commanding lead.
However, in one of the few times the Royals had the ball in the box, the Mallards failed to effectively clear it, and a reckless slide tackle from a Prep defender gave Delmarva Christian a penalty shot. Junior Christian Worley kept his approach simple and guided a finesse shot into the corner of the net, making the score 3-1 heading into halftime.
The floodgates opened for the Mallards in the second half. Senior Dylan McGovern completed his hat trick and added another one to make four on the day. Freshman Caleb Walston scored all three of his goals in the second half to give two players hat tricks. Dylan’s brother Ben McGovern also scored a goal and added an assist. Before all was said and done, Prep earned an 8-1 victory to sweep the regular-season series with the ESIAC rival.
Following the loss, the 5-4 Royals will hope to get back on the winning side when they welcome Laurel Thursday, Oct. 5, and Salisbury School Friday, Oct. 6, in back-to-back games.
