Benjamin’s four goals lead Cape over Milford

October 9, 2023

It was the Cardin Benjamin show Oct. 5 in Milford, as his four goals lifted the Cape soccer team over the previously unbeaten Bucs 4-0.

Benjamin has scored 11 goals in the first seven games this season.

“This was a great test for us,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “Losing on Tuesday against [Caesar Rodney] in such an uncharacteristic fashion, we weren’t sure how we were going to come out in a match with an undefeated Milford team. Our guys rose to the occasion. They left no doubt. It was such a defensive win for us, earning the clean sheet. Our back third played so well, matching up with their talented forwards. Cardin Benjamin came through again with his uncanny ability to finish in the front third.”

Cape outshot the Bucs 8-3.

Cape hit the scoreboard at the 10-minute mark when Benjamin curved a corner kick past Milford goalie Fernando Flores. He scored again on a rush upfield, taking a pass from Jack Schell and and slipping it past Flores two minutes into the second half. And it was Benjamin again at the 72-minute mark off a pass from John Flynn. Just a minute later, he scored unassisted to complete the haul.

The Vikings held a 4-2 edge in corners. Jake Hutchison made three saves for Cape, while Milford’s Fernando Flores stopped four scoring attempts.

Milford moves to 7-1 on the season, while the Vikings are 6-1.

Cape hosts Sussex Academy Tuesday, Oct. 10, while the Bucs host Delmar.
