For the first time, Kings Highway will be closed for the safety of Halloween trick or treaters.
The road will be shut down from McFee Street to Third Street, where it meets Savannah Road, from 4:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 31.
“The Kings Highway corridor puts on a pretty unique Halloween party with hundreds, if not thousands, of parents and trick or treaters,” said Lewes Police Chief Tom Spell. “We’ll be diverting traffic that would normally use Kings onto Savannah. Freeman Highway is also an option.”
The effort to shut down Kings Highway was led by residents Kevin Keane and Mary McInerney.
“We moved here three years ago and we noticed that cars go through the corridor with little kids going around,” said Keane. “We approached the chief about three weeks ago with the idea of shutting it down.”
Spell said the Delaware Department of Transportation will put up signboards to remind drivers of the closure. He said DelDOT will also be there on Halloween night to help with detours.
City manager honored
In other business, mayor and council honored outgoing Lewes City Manager Ann Marie Townshend. The Oct. 9 council meeting was her last as city manager, as she leaves her position Friday, Oct. 13.
Townshend has run the city’s day-to-day operations for the last six years. She is leaving to join a private consulting firm in Dover.
“It’s a difficult choice to move on, but I’m looking forward to new opportunities,” Townshend said.
“As a city council, and working with city council and the larger community, we’ve dealt with some really challenging issues and, obviously, everybody’s not always happy,” Townshend said. “We’ve assembled a fine team of professionals who are committed to serving the public.”
Assistant City Manager Ellen Lorraine McCabe will serve as acting city manager while the city looks for Townshend’s successor.
Extra Mile Day
The city also presented the owners of Lloyd’s Market with the Extra Mile Day proclamation.
The honor recognizes Lloyd’s for its commitment to service and volunteerism and for providing opportunities for area farmers to sell their products closer to home.
The family-owned and operated market has been located at Savannah Road and Manila Avenue for more than 50 years.
The City of Lewes will recognize Extra Mile Day Wednesday, Nov. 1. Extra Mile Day celebrates individuals and organizations that have chosen to create positive change in their communities by going the extra mile.
