Cape Henlopen Elks honor veterans at banquet

Members of Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 of Lewes held a free banquet dinner for its veterans Nov. 8, in recognition of Veterans Day.

Hosted by the lodge's veterans committee, the program began with appetizers and fellowship, and continued with welcoming remarks by Bob Trafton, committee chair; the presentation of colors by JROTC cadet Mara Lobley; the national anthem sung by Exalted Ruler Joy Schreck; the Pledge of Allegiance led by Past Exalted Ruler Ralph Patterson; opening remarks by Schreck; and a blessing by the Rev. Jack Anderson, chaplain.

Served buffet-style, dinner consisted of chicken cordon bleu, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cranberry relish, rolls and assorted desserts.

Guest speaker Dr. Donald L. Sturtz (RADM, USN retired), who is 90 years old, entertained the attendees with stories from his impressive military career and answered questions. Later, the crowd of approximately 114 were brought to their feet by “Proud to Be an American” and “God Bless America” sung by Schreck.

Special recognized guests included some of the recipients of veterans committee donations in the past year including Eric Eldridge, academic counselor for veterans and service members, Delaware Technical Community College; and some of the JROTC cadets from Cape Henlopen High School, Mara Lobley, Miguel Mendez, Annemarie Rodriguez and Alonso Gonzalez; along with Col. Edward Dowgin and 1st Sgt Philip Webb. Also in the audience was longtime Elk Tom Terrell (Capt., USMC retired).

Throughout the evening, music was provided by local DJ Sherman “The Sherminator” Newton, concluding with a resounding medley of the theme songs from five branches of the U.S. military.

Organizers hope this humble celebration helped local veterans feel appreciated and honored for their bravery, sacrifice and love for the country.
