Cape boys’ basketball falls to Lake

December 22, 2023

The Cape boys’ basketball team followed its lackluster performance against Dover with a 58-32 loss to the visiting Spartans of Lake Forest Dec. 21. Lake moves to 6-0, while Cape falls to 3-2.

The Vikings and Spartans were tied at 9-9 after the first quarter, but Cape didn’t score until the 3:59 mark of the second, falling behind 25-15 at the half. The Lake squad won the second half 33-17 to garner the 26-point victory.

The Vikings committed 16 turnovers, of which 11 came in the uninspired second half.

“The effort in the second half was not up to our standards,” said Cape coach Stave Re. “I have been coaching a long time, and I can’t recall the last time a team has responded so poorly after a lackluster half with the game still being within our grasp. We need to deal with our frustrations of not scoring well while still staying locked in at all times. Hopefully we can make some changes that can inspire better play.”

Cape senior Jack Schell paced the Vikings with nine points. Jayden Dukes added eight, including a pair of three-pointers.

“We obviously got to work on some things,” said Dukes. “We need to keep improving and try to find a solution.”

Darius Miller led the Spartans with 21 points. Jackson Starkey chipped in 11.

The Vikings are back on the hardwood Tuesday, Dec. 26, when they host to Caravel Academy to open Slam Dunk to the Beach.
