Cape district honors Lefty’s Alley & Eats for work with students

The Cape Henlopen school board recognized Lefty’s Alley & Eats for being a Cape Community Champion at its March 14 meeting.

Since it opened in 2016, Lefty’s has welcomed Sussex Consortium vocational students into its lively atmosphere, said board Vice President Julie Derrick.

“Lefty’s quickly became a preferred vocational site for many of our students,” she said.

Student duties include cleaning and sanitizing bowling balls, vacuuming and restocking prize shelves, Derrick said. In addition to their work responsibilities, students practice taking turns and good manners while learning to count and save tickets for bigger prizes.

Each month, students get paid by redeeming their rewards cards, playing games and cashing their tickets in for prizes, she said.

Community organizations have added so much to the district and the lives of its students, said Superintendent Bob Fulton, who noted Sussex Consortium is one of the best things about the Cape community.

“So many businesses in our community don’t just allow our students to be part of their organizations for a time period, but also love our students,” he said. “We talk to anybody in these organizations; they get more out of it than our kids do.”
