Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra to play in Lewes Sept. 28

Soloist Grace Park to perform on rare 1717 Guarneri violin
September 7, 2024

Embarking on its 27th season, the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra will present its Violin Virtuoso concert at 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes.

Music Director Michael Repper said the program will begin with Johannes Brahms’ “Tragic Overture” and end with Felix Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto,“ performed by Grace Park, winner of the Naumberg International Violin Competition. Park will perform on a rare 1717 Guarneri violin.

The concert will also feature the seldom-heard “Symphony in A Minor” by Alice Mary Smith (1839-84). Educated at the Royal Academy of Music, Smith was the first British woman to compose a symphony. At her death, The Atheneum described the Victorian composer’s music as “marked by elegance and grace ... power and energy.”
