Josephine Keir Ltd. to spotlight rugs from Nepal Sept. 28
Josephine Keir Ltd. Rug & Home will host an informational event about rugs created in Nepal, from 3 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept 28, at its Lewes store, 33506 Crossing Ave., Unit 5, Five Points Square.
Special guest expert will be Ned Baker from Tamarian Rugs, a producer of artisan-made creations. Baker will explore the virtue of what good materials, hand knotting and specialty, smaller, independent stores bring to the consumer.
He will explain that every step of production is completed with care and touch of the human hand and that many techniques and tools have remained unchanged through centuries. Rugs are woven with the finest natural and synthetic fiber blends available. Dyemasters use a small pot dying process to enhance the materials natural boldness and luster, while maintaining colorfastness for generations to come.
When weaving is completed, the rug is cut from the loom, trimmed and sheared meticulously by hand. Rugs are washed with plain water (three times) which ensures that the rugs are free of chemicals and that they continue to keep natural lanolin oil in the finished piece. Lastly, the rug is sun dried to bring out the rich hues and variations that are the hallmark of every Tamarian Tibetan rug.
Ryan Higgins, owner of Tamarian, has written a new book highlighting the story of the rugs, with an emphasis of the story of the people in Nepal who produce these gems. Signed copies will be available for purchase.
Pianist Jeff Irwin will provide musical entertainment and light refreshments will be served.
