Sussex County Habitat dedicates new home for Thompson family

Sussex County Habitat for Humanity dedicated a new home for the Thompson family Sept. 12, marking the completion of another project in the organization's ongoing efforts to provide affordable housing throughout the county.

The Thompson family participated in Habitat's comprehensive program, which includes financial and homeownership education as well as construction work. This approach aims to prepare families for the responsibilities of homeownership.

At the ceremony, the Thompson family representative said, "It’s a blessing what [Habitat] does for families. I’m thankful. I love you all, and I’m glad to be here.”

Laurel Mayor John Shwed attended the event and highlighted the ongoing neighborhood revitalization effort by Sussex Habitat in his town, saying, "Habitat has provided wonderful new opportunities for families that need housing." Also in attendance were other local government figures including County Council President Michael Vincent and representatives from the Town of Laurel.

The dedication included presentation of a symbolic key, a ribbon cutting, and a chance to tour the new home, allowing attendees to see how it was designed to meet the Thompson family's needs.

Katie Millard, Sussex Habitat director of development and advocacy, said, "Our program focuses on creating an accessible path to affordable homeownership. Partner families invest significant time and effort throughout the process. It’s not a handout, it’s a hand up."

This home is part of Habitat's continued work to address housing challenges in Sussex County. The organization relies on community support, including volunteers and donors, to carry out its mission.
