DE Turf Sports Complex hosted the inaugural Turkey Brawl Lacrosse Tournament Nov. 30 in Frederica, where 10 Delaware and Maryland high school teams faced off in a highly competitive and fast-moving six-on-six format.
The event was more than just a showcase of Maryland and Delaware lacrosse talent, as the Turkey Brawl was played in the memory of local lacrosse advocate Bill Conway and served as a celebration of his legacy and his unwavering commitment to youth sports. Conway died Sept. 29.
Scores were kept and a championship game was played, but what really mattered was the camaraderie of the lacrosse brothers playing to honor a man whose passion for lacrosse and youth development left a lasting impact on the community. Conway’s sons Pierce, 14, and Grant, 16, play for the Cape Vikings, and his youngest, Hayes, 11, plays for the local Coastal travel squad.
“The tournament was a heartfelt tribute to Bill,” said DE Turf Director Dan Yearick. “He was a beloved community leader and former member of the DE Turf board of directors who played a pivotal role in the development of the complex. His vision and dedication helped transform DE Turf into the world-class facility it is today.
“This year’s tournament featured competition and community pride, as schools battled it out in the fast-paced format,” Yearick said. “The event amplified the power of lacrosse as the healing game to bring together players, families and fans to honor Bill.
“I want to give a sincere thank you to everyone who made the Turkey Brawl Lacrosse Tournament a success,” said Yearick. ”From players and coaches and families to volunteers and sponsors. A special thank you to the Conway family for sharing Bill’s legacy with us.”
Anyone who wishes to honor Conway may make a contribution to his children’s future education. Checks should be made payable to Kristin Conway with “Bill Conway Memorial Fund” in the memo and mailed to Faw Casson, CPA, c/o Alison Houck Andrew, 20245 Bay Vista Road, Unit 204, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
