Athletes of the Week Dec. 6

December 6, 2024
Mehkia Applewhite

Cash or charge? Always choose cash when Mehkia is driving to the basketball because taking the charge always yields a low-percentage return on investment. Mehkia was a Cape sophomore on the 2020 pandemic team that had its season canceled before a trip to the semifinals; the Vikings settled for a 19-3 record with crushing disappointment. Mehkia scored a game-high 22 points Nov. 26 for the Menlo Oaks, shooting 10-for-16 from the field and adding six rebounds in a 75-66 win over the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. Mehkia is a junior. Last season, she scored a total of 17 points. Although she’s a three-hour time difference from Cape, it is apparent the Mehkia muppet from Sesame Street by the Sea is on the map in Menlo, Calif. Menlo is located in the Silicon Valley about 20 miles from San Francisco.

Abbey Hearn

Abbey was one of the most prolific and productive inside players in Cape basketball history, graduating in 2020. She is now a graduate student playing her final season for Kutztown University. Through seven games, Abbey has 44 rebounds, 13 assists and eight blocked shots while averaging six points a game. “The players from Abbey’s era all come to visit a practice when they are home from college,” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “They have done so much for the program, and hopefully the program has helped them in some ways.” Last season as a senior starter, Abbey averaged 11 points per game for Kutztown. She is a dean’s list student majoring in sports management. She’s also a PSAC scholar-athlete. Abbey spent her first two high school seasons lighting it up for Sussex Academy before transferring to Cape.

Morgan Mahoney

Morgan was a sophomore on Cape’s 2020 pandemic team. Straight out of Beacon Middle School, where she was on the 13-0 team her eighth-grade year, Morgan is now a junior playing for Millersville University. Morgan led Cape to a Henlopen Conference Championship her senior season, scoring 15 points, and the Vikings won the conference championship three times in Morgan's four seasons. Standing 6-foot-1, Morgan could go inside but was also a deft outside shooter. As a sophomore at Millersville, Morgan appeared in 27 games; she led the team in blocked shots and scored double figures six times, including 19 points in a win over Mansfield. Morgan is a starter this season, leading the team in blocks and averaging eight points per game for the 5-1 Marauders.

Drew Zimmerman

A sophomore guard at Delaware Tech Stanton in Newark, Drew is straight out of Cape Henlopen. Two notable assets about Drew from his Cape days were his handle and his hair. Drew could see the court, spot the open person and get them the basketball. And he looked cool doing it. Drew has been lighting up the scoreboard this early season through eight games, consistently scoring over 22 points a game, including a game-high 33 in a recent 95-85 loss to Union Community College. Delaware Tech plays in Region 19 of the National Junior College Athletic Association. Drew was recently named EPAC Conference Player of the Week. Looking back, Drew scored 23 points in an 84-63 win over Smyrna on Senior Night in 2023. Drew’s game has always been there. Now he’s getting it done every night for Delaware Tech.
