The Cape boys’ basketball team moved to 8-4 on the season with a 68-41 grounding of the Ravens of Sussex Tech Jan. 28.
The Vikings set the tone in the first quarter, leading 16-8 before extending the lead to 33-20 at the half. The second half was more of the same, as the Vikings outscored the Ravens 35-21.
“It wasn’t our cleanest performance of the season,” said Cape head coach Steve Re. “But you always need to take the win versus a conference opponent. We continue to eclipse our season high with 17 assists as a team. We need to limit the turnovers and improve our rebuilding efforts, but overall we took care of business.”
Senior Damian Robinson led the scoring with 19, including four from behind the three-point arc.
“I feel as we played team ball and everyone was passing up good shots for great ones,” said Robinson. “That led to a run, and that got our energy up, which increased our intensity on defense and then allowed us to get the nice win at home.”
Sophomore Jameson Tingle had a double-double, scoring 16 and snagging 10 rebounds. He also had six steals.
“I think we played the same as the last time we beat them as far as an energy and ball movement standpoint,” Tingle said. “We shot the ball much better than we did last time as well.”
Sophomore Geordan Downing hit for 11 points, dished off eight assists and grabbed four rebounds.
Re was quick to give kudos to his bench, including Mar’Zel Burris-Campbell, who scored nine points in just nine minutes of play.
“Mar’Zel has been working his way up the rotation at practice,” Re said. “He stepped up against Dover and earned some more trust tonight. If he can continue to improve, that can really help our depth as we head into the second half of the season.”
Starters Braxton Figgs and Stephen Sivels teamed for nine points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
“We played just fine basketball-wise,” said Figgs. “While victory is sweet, we cannot get comfortable. Every game matters from here on out.”
The JV Vikings got back in the winning lane, outlasting the Ravens 38-36. They moved to 5-6 on the season.
Joe Ruark scored 13, while Nathan Re hit for 10.
