'The Great Outdoors' kicks off Cinema by the Canal Series June 27

June 21, 2012

Cinema by the Canal kicks off the summer schedule with a screening of “The Great Outdoors" Wednesday, June 27, at the Lewes Canalfront Park. Cinema by the Canal features outdoor film screenings for all ages. The three-part series is sponsored by the Rehoboth Beach Film Society, Friends of Canalfront Park, and Citizens Bank.

In this comedy, big-hearted Chicago family man Chet Ripley (John Candy) has brought his family to a Wisconsin lakeside resort, and although his wife and kids aren't quite as excited as he is, Chet has high hopes for the vacation. Then the unexpected happens when know-it-all brother-in-law Roman Craig (Dan Aykroyd) shows up with his wife and twin daughters.

Can one carefree family cohabit with obnoxious relatives and salvage their vacation, or will their patience run out? What is Roman’s ulterior motive for crashing the Ripley’s vacation, and when will it be revealed? Annette Bening made her film debut as Aykroyd's ill-tempered wife.

The film will begin at dusk (8:15 - 8:30 p.m.) at Canalfront Park, 211 Front St. in Lewes. Admission is free. Bring chairs or blankets and insect repellent. For more information, go to www.rehobothfilm.com.

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is funded, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
