Cape Senior League baseball wins District 3 championship

Cape loses in Camden Wyoming 3-1 in state tournament

The Cape Henlopen Senior League baseball team fell to Camden Wyoming 3-1 in the opening round of the state tournament July 25.  The loss drops Cape into the losers' bracket in the double elimination tournament.  Cape will face the winner of the July 26 Camden Wyoming - Namaan's Road matchup at 7 p.m., Friday, July 27, at the Brandywine Little League Complex.

"Brandon Keller pitched a heck of a game, giving up 3 runs, all unearned," said coach Ukee Johnson. "Our team hit the ball well, but right at them, just couldn't get the big hit. We had several chances with men on base but couldn't score.  Jon Jon Warren went 4-4 with a run scored. DD Gooch went 2 for 4 and had a great game behind the plate."

Under the direction of Johnson, the Cape team defeated Millsboro 5-4 and Georgetown 6-4 in earlier rounds, then shut out Georgetown 10-0 in the championship game to win the District 3 banner July 22.

Brandon Keller was the winning pitcher against Millsboro, going 5 1/3 innings and recording 5 strikeouts. Brandon also collected 2 hits and produced 3 RBIs.

Jon Warren was credited with a save, recording 4 strikeouts of the five batters faced.

Tyler Clendaniel was the winning pitcher in the 6-4 win over Georgetown, recording 6 Ks over 6 1/3 innings of work .

Jon Warren was 3 for 3 with a walk while DD Gooch scored a pair of runs. The team turned a pair of double plays; the second one ended the game.

Ryan Simpler earned the victory in the 10-0 championship win over Georgetown, recording 7 Ks in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Hunter Engel was 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and a walk; he also scored twice and had 1 RBI.

DJ Erickson came off the bench to pinch hit for a walk and scored a run that contributed to the 10-run slaughter rule victory.

Eric Gloria had 4 put outs at second base while Zach Stevenson scored 3 runs.
