Del Tech honors graduates of Direct Support Professional Certificate program

June 2, 2013

Delaware Tech recently awarded certificates to the first class of the Direct Support Professional Certificate program. The new program, offered at the Dover, Georgetown and Wilmington campuses, trains students to help individuals with developmental disabilities live in their home communities and thrive. There were 12 graduates of the program across the state – including seven at the Wilmington campus, three at the Owens Campus in Georgetown and two at the Terry Campus in Dover.

Students in the programs earn at least 12 credit hours from a combination of classroom instruction and field work with courses including face-to-face and online instruction. The skills and knowledge learned can be applied to residential programs, day programs, or any combination of services appropriate for the client. Labor market studies in Delaware indicate new job openings in this field within the next five years, and employers of direct support professionals are strongly encouraging certification.

Dr. Catherine Kavanagh, Delaware Tech instructor and program coordinator, says the certification fits a need in the workforce today. “Social changes and advocacy are emphasizing the need and desire to make life opportunities available to everyone, including a person who has a disability. This program promotes a person-centered approach that emphasizes support for employment, independent living community access and life skill development. The students in this program are dedicated to helping and advocating for others.”
