Sussex Central is 'Knights out' grounding down Cape 35-21
A Friday football fright night in suburban Georgetown was no treat for Cape Henlopen, which led pesky and resurgent Sussex Central 21-13 heading into halftime before one last desperation “throw it up for grabs" pass stuck to both hands of Arron Spady like a candy apple for a 15-yard touchdown. Tim Jones followed with a two-point conversion run and it was blackjack on black Friday with the score tied at 21.
“We’ve got to make that play and the play before that when their quarterback takes off around the right end for 30 yards and we don’t contain him,” said coach Bill Collick after the game. “And make no mistake, we didn’t overlook them; every team's season is its own story. We have one more week to end ours on a good chapter."
Cape kicked off in the second half and went “squib city” for the fourth time in the game, giving the Knights field possession on the 50-yard line. All punts were poison and kickoffs were bounced down the middle; such cautiousness does not instill confidence on Halloween Friday night against a team that has owned Cape 14-1 over the last 15 years.
Sussex Central (4-5) owned the second half, outscoring Cape 14-0 and walking away with a 35-21 victory and a chance to break even on the season with a home victory over Indian River Friday, Nov. 7.
Cape drops to 7-2 and finishes up with a Smyrna team (5-4) Nov. 7 that just beat Caesar Rodney for the first time in 40 years 36-33 and owns a 35-29 win over Sussex Central earlier this season.
Notes - Sussex Central owns a 4-1 series advantage over Cape during the Bill Collick era, averaging 31 points a game while yielding 22. Both Cape and Central run the classic wing-T offense. Central amassed 384 yards rushing led by quarterback Amontay Clanton and Jones with more than 100 yards while James Jenkins and Shawn Savage each rushed for 80. Cape scores were by Bill Gibbs, Ja’Von Currie and Jason Wiberg.
Six teams make the post-season Division I tournament. The top eight heading into the last week of the season are William Penn, Middletown, Sussex Tech, St. Mark’s, Concord, Newark, Cape and Salesianum. The scenario is really about the last four playing for the final two spots on the last weekend of the season. Concord will host Newark, Cape hosts Smyrna and Salesianum is at Middletown. A Sallies win at Middletown (tall order) most likely puts them in and knocks Cape out even with a win over Smyrna.
