Robert 'Bob' Wells, avid golfer
Robert O. “Bob” Wells passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at the Country Rest Home in Greenwood. He was the son of Louise Shores Wells and Robert E.T. Wells.
Bob was born Dec. 17, 1928, and attended school in Salisbury, Md. At age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served from 1946-49, primarily deployed on the U.S.S. Providence in the Atlantic. Upon completing his service time, he returned to Salisbury and worked in that area. He married Peggy Jones and they had one daughter, Dru.
In 1963, he married Jean C. Hickman and they made their home in Dagsboro. Bob began his career with Diamond State Telephone from which he retired in 1990. He and Jean then moved to Hollywood, Fla., and made their home there until August, 2014. They made many good friends there and Bob worked for many years at the Grand Palms Country Club.
Bob was an avid golfer and one of his proudest moments was winning the Salisbury Elks Club Championship. He also enjoyed dancing to Big Band music, surf fishing, swimming, reading and watching Westerns, and spending time with his family.
Bob was a lifetime member of the Selbyville Elks Lodge 2173, a longtime member of the Salisbury Elks Lodge 817, the American Legion Post 92 (in Hollywood) and the Wicomico Masonic Lodge 91 of Salisbury.
Bob was predeceased by his parents and his wife of over 51 years, Jean, who passed away March 29, 2015. He was also predeceased by his stepson, Barry R. Hickman of Frankford; and stepgrandson, Shane Hickman of Dagsboro. He is survived by his brother, Dean Wells (Alice Ann) of Salisbury, Md.; his daughter, Drucilla “Dru” Wells of Fredericksburg, Va.; his stepson, John P. Hickman of Dagsboro; his step-daughter-in-law, Paulette Hickman (Barry) of Frankford; four stepgrandchildren, Shannon Hickman, Mark Hickman (Jaclyn), Shawn Hickman (fiancée, Kim) and Beth Hickman Kent (Mike); six stepgreat-grandchildren, Destiny, Kody, Jeremy, Cali, and Katelyn Hickman and Charlotte Kent.
A memorial service will be held at the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, Tuesday, May 26, at 2 p.m. The Rev. William T. Sterling will officiate.
