Brandywine Senior Living at Seaside Pointe recently underwent renovations and now, with the work complete, residents of the assisted living center and their families are enjoying a facility that more closely resembles a community than an institution.
Since last year, Brandywine has added two new wings, the Peter J. Burke dementia unit, which opened in December; and the newest update, the Bay Club, for a total of 42 new apartments and a total of more than 100 full-time residents.
Community Relations Director Heidi McNeeley said the Bay Club, which houses a new dine-anytime bistro with light fare such as crab cake sliders or sirloin burgers, and social areas that double as game rooms, feels more exclusive to many new residents.
Apartments in the unit have new carpet, lighting and window treatments, but are otherwise furnished with a resident's belongings. They come standard with a mini-kitchen, accessible bathroom, wireless internet and cable, and McNeeley said a set of married residents even decided to make two separate neighboring apartments into a suite.
When Rehoboth resident Susan Krick stopped in recently, she was scouting for her mother, who is currently in rehabilitation in Lewes, but may need more care than her daughter can provide in the future.
After driving all over the county, Krick said she was relieved to arrive at Brandywine, a facility she was already familiar with from word-of-mouth and her years as a Girl Scout leader.
"Our neighbor's parents are there and they love it," Krick said. "We are definitely going there. Its beautiful, everyone is nice, its clean and it smells good. I talked to my neighbors dad and he is loving it."
She also noticed the new renovations and was amazed at how much the facility has grown with the aging population.
"Its a lot different," Krick said. "They've done so much."
