June 22, 2015

Barbara Lucille Bolton Smith, ageless, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2015, peacefully in her home in Ocean View. Born in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Eva Williams Bolton and Harvey Benjamin Bolton.

She is survived by children Benjamin Bolton Smith, Lesley Kyle Smith, Caroline William Smith Trevino, Owen Magruder Smith, and grandson Imre Rafael Trevino. Also surviving are two nieces, three nephews, and her loving, devoted caregivers.

Barbara was a graduate of Sidwell Friends School class of 1948. She studied altar flower arranging at the Washington Cathedral, she worked several years on the booth at the Flower Mart when she was a member of the Four Seasons Garden Club (president of the garden club her third year). She was a member of the Sulgrave Club, gave tours at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History (Indian) and Museum of American History. She was also chairman of the Smithsonian docents in 1964, the year S. Dillon Ripley began his service as secretary of the Smithsonian Institutions.

Barbara moved to Ocean View in 1989. She worked as a sales associate with Crowley Associates Realty. She loved flowers and had a beautiful garden. One of the hallmarks of her life were her beautiful floral arrangements. She did many floral arrangements for the cottage tours to help raise funds for the South Coastal Library.

Her biggest triumph of her life was as a grateful member of AA, her outreach to help others in the program as well as with The Way Home ministry. Thanks to AA and the 12 steps, she would have celebrated 39 years of sobriety June 2015. She was a member of St. Martha’s Episcopal Church in Bethany Beach.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 11, at St. Martha’s Episcopal Church in Bethany Beach. The Rev. Mary Allen will officiate.
