Bidens to be in town a couple of days beginning June 18

Arriving late in the day and then leaving his North Shores home June 20 for Camp David

Looking to avoid those busy summer weekend crowds, President Joe Biden is making a mid-week trip to his North Shores home, just north of Rehoboth Beach.

According to the White House Week Ahead Guidance and Press Schedule issued June 16, the president and first lady Jill Biden will be in town Tuesday, June 18, after participating in a campaign reception in McLean, Va. Earlier in the day, said the guidance, the president will host an an event at the White House marking the 12th anniversary of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. The guidance says Biden will be leaving North Shores and heading to Camp David on Thursday, June 20.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a restricted flight notice June 17 that begins at 10 p.m., Tuesday, June 18, and ends at 9 p.m., Thursday, June 20.

Given the location of their house, there’s not too much of a disturbance when the Bidens are in town, but there are noticeable security measures put in place by the Secret Service. Here’s a list of what can be seen:

  • Gordons Pond users could see restrictions. The park’s parking lot is just around the corner from Biden’s home and is used as a landing site for Marine One.
  • If Biden decides to drive, motorists on Route 1 should be prepared for delays. By road, there’s really only one way to his house – southbound on Route 1, then through Rehoboth Beach. As the presidential motorcade makes its way south, police and state personnel sit at all intersections blocking traffic.
  • The FAA’s temporary flight restrictions limit use of the airspace – including drones – from Dover south to Ocean City, Md., and west to the Maryland border.
  • The Coast Guard establishes security zones in the ocean area immediately in front of North Shores beach and in the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal.

It looks like the next few days will be perfect beach days – the National Weather Service is calling for sun with temperatures in the mid-80s pretty much through to the weekend – which means the Bidens may hit the beach during their brief visit.
