Three-vehicle collision leads to temporary road closure in Dewey

June 25, 2024

A serious motor vehicle collision occurred about 1:37 p.m., June 24, on Coastal Highway at the intersection of Read Avenue in Dewey Beach.

The Dewey Beach Police Department, in conjunction with the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company, Bethany Beach and Roxana Volunteer Fire Companies, Sussex County EMS, Delaware State Fire Police and Delaware Department of Transportation, responded promptly to the scene.

The incident involved a Chevrolet Equinox, a Jeep Wrangler and a Honda Odyssey, said Dewey Beach Police Lt. Cliff Dempsey. Preliminary investigations indicate that the Equinox was traveling southbound on Coastal Highway when it collided with the rear of the Wrangler. The impact caused the Wrangler to drift forward, striking the Odyssey, which was stationary in traffic.

The force of the collision caused the Equinox to overturn at the intersection. The driver and sole occupant of the Equinox, a 69-year-old female from Selbyville, was trapped inside the vehicle. RBVFC personnel successfully extricated the driver, who was then airlifted to Christiana Medical Center in serious but stable condition. The occupants of the Wrangler and Odyssey were not injured in the accident.

Due to the severity of the incident, Coastal Highway southbound at Read Avenue was temporarily closed to traffic. Authorities worked diligently to clear the scene, and the highway was reopened at approximately 3:30 p.m.

The Dewey Beach Police Department is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Further details will be released as they become available.
