Cape baseball downs the Bucs in premier matchup
In a matchup between No. 1 Cape and No. 2 Caravel at Chris Short Field April 10, the Vikings took a 4-1 win to improve to 8-0 on the season. Caravel dropped to 3-1.
Junior right-handed pitcher Brad Marks picked up his fourth win, going 5.2 innings, allowing one run and striking out six batters. Jacob Smith came in from the bullpen to toss 1.1 innings with three strikeouts.
The Caravel squad, behind lefty Timothy Tyler, drew first blood in the second inning when John Bujnowski slammed a double and knocked in the only run for Caravel.
“I’m really proud of how my guys stuck to the game plan and competed for seven innings,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “Brad Marks did an outstanding job battling through some tough situations to keep Caravel at one run. We finally broke through in the fifth inning.”
The fifth started with a walk by Jaxon Clampitt. Trey Hitchcock laid down a perfect bunt that turned into a base hit. Shortstop Brady Kosc then delivered with a two-run single to put the Vikings ahead 3-1. Cape added its fourth run on a first-and-third play.
“Jacob Smith came in with two outs and two on base, and got a three-pitch strikeout to end the threat,” Evick said. “He closed the door in the seventh with a three-up, three-down inning with two Ks.”
Cape downed Indian River 7-2 April 9.
Reed Thompson earned the win for Cape, throwing 5.2 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out six batters.
Brian Fleming went 1-for-4 with a triple. Brady Kosc had a hit, an RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Senior third baseman Lex Wescott scored two runs from two walks and had two stolen bases.
Isaac Terhune, Jase Mitchell and Malachi Woods also knocked in runs.
“Reed did a nice job on the mound challenging their hitters all day,” said Evick. “We battled at the plate early, hitting some balls hard right to people. [IR] played good defense and we worked hard to produce a few runs. We finally broke it open in the sixth, putting the game away. We’ve been doing a nice job on the base paths, stealing bases and reading balls in the dirt to move up into scoring position.”
