The Cape baseball team’s season came to an end May 25, with a 5-4 upset loss to No. 19 Middletown. The Cavs outhit the No. 3 Vikings 8-6 in the game.
Senior Brian Fleming went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Vikings.
“We had a really good season,” said an emotional Fleming. “We played hard. There’s really nothing you can blame. They won. I’m proud of our team. We are 16-2.”
Junior Trey Hitchcock went 1-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored.
“We had a good season,” said Hitchcock. “We had a great group of guys, and we put in the work every day. Everyone on the team is phenomenal. We may not have been focused on today’s game and looking toward the future. Mental mistakes got us.”
Isaac Terhune delivered an RBI, while Gage Joseph and Jase Mitchell each added a hit. Jaxon Clampitt picked up three walks, while Joseph, Hitchcock and Malachi Woods each had a free pass. Brady Kosc was hit by a pitch.
Brad Marks went 4.2 innings on the mound, giving up five hits and three earned runs while striking out three. Jacob Smith came in from the bullpen in the fifth, giving up three hits and two runs while striking out four.
Fleming, Terhune and Clampitt each had a stolen base.
“It was a tough loss,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “We didn’t play our best game, and the tournament isn’t the place you can get away with that. We had some chances to put more runs on the board and didn’t come through when we needed it. With the bases loaded and one out, we smashed a ball right at their second baseman and they rolled the double play to end the season. We had a tremendous season and our seniors had great careers.”
The Cavaliers got two hits from Quincey Martin, Carter Boyd and Brady Stenvik. Carter Boyd garnered two RBIs in the sixth inning.
The Cavs will face Caesar Rodney in the quarterfinals Tuesday, May 28, in Camden.
