The Cape baseball team scored two runs in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie, then added one more in the sixth to snatch a 6-3 victory over visiting Lake Forest April 27.
Isaac Terhune went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Barritt Ross went 2-for-4 with a double. Lex Wescott, Brenn Scott, Jase Mitchell and Owen Daminger all knocked in an RBI.
Jaxon Clampitt went five innings on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out four Spartans batters. Reed Thompson came in from the bullpen; he didn’t allow a hit and struck out three.
“I was excited our guys battled from behind early,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “When tested this year, we have stepped up and responded. We continued to put pressure on them and produce runs. Jaxon [Clampitt] settled down and Reed [Thompson] did a nice job coming in in relief, and throwing strikes and getting ahead in counts. Barritt Ross had a good day at the plate with two doubles. It was good to see him have a breakout day. The guys are working hard each day to improve.”
Anthony Hooks knocked in two runs for the Spartans.
The Vikings traveled to Archbishop Spalding April 29 and fell 3-1 to the Maryland powerhouse.
Scott knocked in the only Cape run in the sixth inning.
Nick Cox started and went three innings, giving up one run and striking out one. Ross came in from the bullpen to finish the game.
“We played really well against a very good team,” Evick said. “We gave them too many free base runners on hit by pitches and walks. I really liked our approach at the plate against a high-end pitcher with very good stuff. We put balls in play hard, but we couldn’t seem to get the timely hits.”
The 10-2 Vikings travel to Polytech Tuesday, May 2.
