Cape senior Nick Cox was lights out on the mound May 30 in the quarterfinals of the DIAA state tournament, as he went the distance in a three-hit 5-1 win over No. 3 seed Caravel on the road in Bear.
The Bucs had defeated the Vikings 2-1 earlier this season.
Cape moves on to face Delaware Military Academy in the semifinals Thursday, June 1, at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington. Game time is 6 p.m.
“I felt good from the beginning of the game,” said Cox. “My changeup and fastball were working.”
Cox allowed just one earned run while striking out four batters and walking one.
“Nick was a dominant force,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “He’s been that way all year, so it was more of what Nick does. He was relaxed and focused from the time he got on the bus. He was even-keeled the whole time, and it showed.”
The Vikings outhit the Bucs 9-3.
Cape senior Owen Daminger went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Brenn Scott went 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Junior Lex Wescott went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Brady Kosc went 2-for-3. Isaac Terhune picked up an RBI in the game. Jaxon Clampitt delivered with a hit and scored in a pinch-hitting role.
“We got a lot of hits today,” said Wescott. “Our defense was really good; Nick threw great and the bats kept rolling. We couldn’t ask for a better game.”
Zane Bohn had a triple for the Bucs, while teammate Truman Auwerda slugged a double.
