The Cape girls’ lacrosse team exploded for 11 first-period goals April 19 against Milford at Champions Stadium then downshifted to a 22-1 victory.
Sixteen different players shared Cape’s 22 goals, with 13 goals assisted. Anna Lopez and Abby Schaeffer combined for five saves.
The Vikings have averaged nine first-period goals over the last four games. Claire Lopez led the point parade with three goals and four assists. Two-goal scorers were Macy Steinwedel, Ally Diehl, Haley Gamuciello and Amara Fruchtman.
Single goals were scored by Lindsay D’Ambrogi, Avary Miller, Lulu Rishko, Allaire Burton, Olivia Burkentine, Grace Wiggins, Addy Basile, Carrie Clausius, Mairead Rishko, Regan Best and Lina Frederick. D’Ambrogi had four assists, while Basile had three. Clausius and Lulu Rishko had one assist each.
Cape has 13 seniors on the roster, but 17 of the goals scored came from underclassmen, including seven from freshmen.
Coach Lindsey Underwood “Our underclassman have really been stepping up and becoming more comfortable as the season progresses. We have been emphasizing that we need everyone to be a scoring threat every game and every possession. Our 13 seniors have been working really well with our underclassman and are setting a great example for our underclassman.”
Milford’s goal was scored by junior Hannah Zimmerman. Madi Stahl, a sophomore, is the guard of the cage for the Buccaneers. Milford has nine freshmen on the varsity roster of 21 players.
Cape will host Caesar Rodney at 6:15 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, at Legends Stadium. The Riders, who have a Monday game at Archmere, are 6-2 with recent wins over Smyrna and Sussex Academy. Caesar Rodney is coached by former Cape goalie Gina Voss. She’s assisted by Jessica Stratton, Rebecca Webb and Deb Windett.
