Cape Henlopen High School received a National Blue Ribbon award for outstanding achievement and the district celebrated with a luncheon Dec. 23. Only 62 high schools of the 33,000 high schools in the United States received this prestigious award.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private schools based on overall academic achievement and their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.
Only seven high schools in the state of Delaware have received this honor since 1982. Cape Henlopen High School is the only comprehensive high school to achieve Blue Ribbon status in Delaware since 1987.
During the ceremony, members of the state House of Representatives and Senate presented a tribute to the Cape High School accepted by Superintendent Robert Fulton.
Rep. Steve Smyk, R-Milton, said, “Cape is a source of pride for me; my own children are products of Cape Henlopen School District.”
Principal Brian Donahue credits the entire Cape Henlopen School District as contributors to the Blue Ribbon Award. Shields Elementary School was named a Blue Ribbon School in 2013.
Donahue said, “Great high schools are created by great elementary and middle schools, community and district support, and we are fortunate enough to have all of this in addition to a committed excellent staff and a dedicated student body.”
Master of ceremonies and Director of Secondary Education Michael Young thanked teachers and staff for the effort and energy that brought the award to Cape.
Following the ceremony, teachers, and staff were treated to gift cards generously donated by local salon and spa Bad Hair Day. All attending enjoyed a buffet luncheon provided by The Starboard in Dewey Beach.
