The Cape boys’ soccer team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-1 victory over Polytech Sept. 19 at Legends Stadium.
The Vikings didn’t waste time, as the speedy Cardin Benjamin took a Jack Schell lead pass and drove it into the cage at the two-minute mark.
Nine minutes later, the Panthers’ Jackson Garrett scored the equalizer off a pass from Hayden Cote. But that was all they would get, as the Vikings got a tally from Donovan Sandoval off Benjamin at 22 minutes.
Benjamin posted his second score of the game on a worm burner blast off a pass from Collin Sivels. Evan Burris ended the first-half scoring at 32 minutes with an unassisted goal.
After the halftime break, Brady Spiegel garnered the Vikings’ fifth goal off a pass from Schell.
The Vikings outshot the Panthers 11-3, with a 5-3 edge in corners.
Cape keepers Jake Hutchison and Emory Schlegel teamed for three saves, while Polytech keeper James Watterton tallied seven.
“This was another great team win,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “Everyone played, and everyone did really well. I’m very excited about the diversity of goal scorers in the attacking third. On any given night, we have a multitude of guys contributing on the stat sheet. We are super pleased with Cardin Benjamin. His level of play and leadership on the field are top-notch.”
The Vikings host Appoquinimink Friday, Sept 22, in Legends Stadium. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
