Sussex Central pitcher Madge Layfield was in the zone April 21, as she delivered a no-hitter against a young Cape squad in a 9-0 win.
The Golden Knights improved to move to 8-1 on the season, while Cape fell to 4-5.
Layfield was helped out at the plate by senior Keylee Verosko’s four-RBI performance, three coming off a homer in the fourth inning. Junior Amara Cropper delivered two RBIs, while senior Mya Jones and sophomore Takyla Davis each had an RBI.
Cropper slugged a triple, while Jones and Katie Evick each delivered a double in the contest.
Layfield struck out 17 batters while allowing two walks.
Cape freshman Abby Marsh threw all six innings for the visitors, striking out five.
Cape shortstop Milena Buehler grabbed a hard ground ball up the middle, stepped on second and threw to Hayden Hudson at first for a double play to end a Knights rally in the sixth inning.
Cape will welcome Sussex Academy, Tuesday, April 26, for Teacher Appreciation Day.
