Cape softball shoots down Ravens

Marsh goes yard in victory
April 7, 2022

The Cape bats struck for six hits, and pitcher Abby Marsh scattered six hits as the Vikings garnered a 10-3 victory over Sussex Tech April 5. The win moves the Vikings to 2-2, while the Ravens fall to 0-4.

Marsh went the distance, striking out nine batters while giving up just two earned runs. She also helped herself out at the plate, knocking a ball over the left-field fence for her first varsity homer. The hit scored Jay’lyn Slater, who had walked.

Freshman Ava Calciano went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Freshman Alivia Heers went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Ava Simeone went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Kenna Justice got a hit and scored two runs.

“We were very disciplined at the plate, drawing 11 walks,” said Cape head coach Shannon Timmons. “Everyone in the lineup produced and contributed to the win. Each time we play, this young team keeps getting better and better. It’s exciting and fun to watch them play. Tech has a rich softball history, so it’s a big win for us. Abby Marsh was just awesome for us in the circle. She worked hard and made adjustments all day to keep Tech’s hitters off balance. We will keep working to improve her ball-to-strike ratios and first-pitch strikes.”

Sussex Tech senior Journey Hopkins went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Laniya Lewis went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Karli Penrod went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Destiny Mitchell went 1-for-3. Freshman Kiersten Passwaters went 1-for-1.

The Vikings take on Seaford Thursday, April 7, at home, while the Ravens travel to Indian River.
