The Cape boys’ volleyball team moves on to the second round of the DIAA state tournament following a 20-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-19 victory over Mount Pleasant May 15 in Lewes.
Tias Small and Bryce Patterson pounded 15 kills each in the Vikings’ victory. Senior Blake Catts recorded four aces and six digs. Setter Talan Stephens had 45 kills and 12 digs. Kieran Morrissey bumped eight digs. Lawson Whaley collected five kills and six digs. Braxton Figgs pounded eight kills.
The Vikings dropped the first set 20-25 before getting their composure back to run off the next three sets.
“We were a little nervous in the first set,” said senior libero Jayceon White. “After that, we dialed in. We had more energy and had a great talk in the huddle with [coach Tyler] Coupe. He gave us a game plan, and we went out and executed it.”
“We didn’t know too much about them,” said senior Blake Catts. “They were a great team, and Harrison McCleery really played well against us. We worked to control him, and from then on, it was fixing our mistakes.”
“I think Mount Pleasant played a really clean, effective game,” said Coupe. “We missed four or five first-ball serves that put us in a rut in the first game. I thought Harrison McCleery played a really smart game. We fell into a rhythm serving in set two. We switched a couple of guys back there. I think that shows our depth. That shows our trust we have in each other. When we took guys out, no one held their head low, and the guys that went in held their heads high. We didn’t play clean by any stretch, but we found ways to score points. This is a great win to get under our belt.”
“On Saturday, we have to get our serves in,” said Stephens. “Our passes have to be perfect.”
“We actually had to calm down after that first set,” said Small. ”I’m really happy that we got this win.”
The 13-2 Vikings will host Brandywine at 6 p.m., Saturday, May 18.
