Cape volleyball shuts out Riders 3-0
The Cape boys’ volleyball team moved to 5-1 with a 25-19, 26-24, 25-17 victory over Caesar Rodney April 12.
Cape junior Bryce Patterson led the Vikings with 12 kills and eight digs.
“This was not our best all-around game,” said Patterson. “We had 28 errors, but we really fought till the end. If we would lose a point, we came back stronger. Between points, the seniors would bring us together and give us positive encouragement, which really helps us with our chemistry, which is through the roof this season.”
Senior Tias Small pounded six kills, while Blake Catts and Braxton Figgs each had five. Lawson Whaley knocked down four. Jayceon White collected five digs. Talan Stephens assisted on 29 shots to go along with five kills.
“Tonight was another fun and exciting match for us,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “CR, from the jump, came out with high energy and more dynamic attackers than we expected. We were a little rocky to start. I thought Jayceon White led a brilliant match in the backcourt with his serve receive. He kept Talan in system really consistently, sparking our offense to hit 0.275 on the night.”
Coupe said connecting with the middles wasn’t as clean as he’d have liked.
“I think our set location and then timing of approach were a bit off, but it is something to strive to improve in practice,” he said. “Our block touches really gave our defense a better chance at passing in system, which was great to see, especially with continued play from first-year players Braxton Figgs and Lawson Whaley.”
He said Catts and Patterson did a good job from the outside controlling their swings and diversifying how they attack, not forcing shots but making something out of what’s being given to them.
The Vikings will host Smyrna Wednesday, April 17.
