The Cape boys’ volleyball team moved to 7-1 on the season with a 25-12, 25-17, 25-22 victory over Smyrna April 17.
Cape’s front-line offense collected 39 kills in the match. Bryce Patterson led the way with 11 kills and five digs. The twin towers of Braxton Figgs and Lawson Whaley pounded eight and seven kills, respectively. Tias Small registered six kills and two aces.
Senior setter Talan Stephens put up 33 assists, six digs and two aces. Kieran Morrissey had six digs and two aces. Jayceon White bumped five digs.
“I’m just trying to fill my role for the team,” said 6-foot-5 Figgs. “I enjoy it, it’s fun and it’s good people. I can’t ask for anything more than that. Good games like this always help us get better. Having Lawson [Whaley] in the middle lets me do a few different things on the right side and lets him get more reps. It’s definitely going to help us.”
“We’ve all been working really hard,” said senior Oakley Roberts. “They were really good competition. I think this was one of our best matches so far. This was good for our confidence and good for our spirit.”
“Tonight was another step in the right direction for our boys,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “It was a competitive match, and we were able to try a few different rotations and move kids to positions that the coaches have wanted to see. Our newer players are picking things up so quickly; they’re diversifying where and how they can impact the match.”
Coupe gave Jayceon White kudos as he continues to steady the serve receive and keeps the team in a rhythm that allows the offense to fire on all cylinders.
“Braxton and Lawson continue to make that 1% growth every day,” Coupe said. “Bryce and Blake continue to try and attack in a variety of shots to make themselves more terminal. Talan’s athletic ability to make really tough plays continues to set him apart from other setters in the state.”
The Cape JV team moved to 3-1 with a 25-14, 19-25, 15-7 win over Smyrna.
Cape will travel to Caesar Rodney Wednesday, April 24, for a Northern Division showdown.
