Dewey Goes Pink raises funds for breast cancer coalition

The largest group for Dewey Goes Pink was 200 friends and family of Jessica Wise, a Polytech High School and Shippensburg University graduate who passed away from breast cancer Feb. 11, 2021. Traffic was crazy, but spirits were in high-energy gear as the 10th annual Dewey Goes Pink kicked off Oct. 9 at the Starboard. More than 3,400 participants helped raise funds to benefit the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.

One of those participants was Dewey Beach Mayor Bill Stevens.

“Dewey Goes Pink is an outstanding event that brings the residents to town, allows guests from neighboring towns to enjoy themselves, and supports our local hotels and business owners,” Stevens said. “The race event was so packed, my wife and I waited until everyone was gone before we started our run. Reminded me of a famous quote from a movie, ‘I think we’re going to need a bigger boat.’ Great job by everyone involved.”

Town Manager Bill Zolper also ran in the race with Stevens and other family members.

“Dewey Goes Pink is truly a special event to raise money in the fight against cancer,” Zolper said. “Monty [Steve Montgomery] and his team at the Starboard, all vendors, Dewey Police Department, DelDOT, state police, the folks on Saulsbury Street,  the citizens and visitors to Dewey did an amazing job this year. This is another outstanding family event in the Town of Dewey Beach for a great cause!” 

Steve “Monty” Montgomery of The Starboard said the event drew record crowds.

 “The Starboard had Dewey Beach painted PINK for the event, a day to not only fundraise for the local Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, but a day for folks to be with loved ones, remember loved ones, to run or walk, eat, drink and celebrate those loved one's Dewey Beach style!” Montgomery said.  

In the first 9 years of Dewey Goes Pink, more than $733,000 has been donated to the DBCC, and this year is sure to match record totals with so many participants, sponsors, and generous donations, Montgomery said.  

"The work that goes into this event is rewarding, just watching so many people take to The Starboard and the streets of Dewey to laugh, cry, hug, and honor or remember those loved ones who have dealt with this nastiness of breast cancer,” Montgomery said. “We love this event, obviously it means the world to our local community so we can thankful for all of the support as we create this avenue to support the DBCC."
