Eleanor V. Kent, longtime teacher

December 30, 2022

Eleanor V. Kent, 95, of Dover, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2022. She was born Sept. 4, 1927, in Westminster, Md., daughter of the late John L. and Charlotte Mae (Whiting) Woodyard.

Eleanor had an unparalleled work ethic and worked many jobs in her quest for higher education. She attended Virginia State College (now called Virginia State University), graduating with honors and earning a bachelor of science degree. During this time, Eleanor pledged to Delta Sigma Theta Inc., Alpha Eta Chapter. After completing her undergraduate studies, she moved to the small town of Cambridge, Md. Eleanor was hired and taught shorthand and typing at St. Clair High School and later at Mace’s Lane High School. During this time, she met an attractive man, a teacher, and her future life partner, George R. Kent. Eleanor married the love of her life March 24, 1951, and together they enjoyed many years and raised a beautiful family. In 1955, she continued her quest for higher education and attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where she earned a master’s degree in education. She was later hired as an instructor at Delaware Technical Community College. Eleanor was dedicated to Delta Sigma Theta Inc., and was a founding member of the Cambridge Alumnae Chapter, chartered April 18, 1952. Her devotion to her family, however, took precedence above all, and the time spent with those she held dear was what she cherished most. Eleanor was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, and friend, who will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to have known her.

In addition to her parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by her daughter, Terri D. Kent. She is survived by her son, George M. Kent; her four grandchildren: Tiye Womack, Malcom Womack, George Kent and William Kent; her great-grandchild, Keillan Adegoye; her sisters; and her many nieces and nephews.

A Delta Sorority Service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 5, at Whatcoat United Methodist Church, 341 Salisbury Road, Dover, followed by a funeral service at 12:30 p.m. Friends may call beginning at 10:30 a.m.
