For years, Rehoboth’s Atlantic Sands Hotel has featured a Boardwalk-fronting outdoor dining area designed to attract beachgoers. Now, with summer about to hit full swing, it’s been renovated and renamed Kiwi’s Tiki Hut.

Set to open Friday, June 12, Kiwi’s patio will offer a family-friendly menu and full-service bar, with eight televisions beneath a shady tiki hut.

During an interview June 5, Megan Hopkins, hotel food and beverage director, said the idea is to build a brand around the new tiki hut. It’s going to be a place for everyone – adults, kids, families, couples, she said.

“There was no real identity,” said Hopkins, of the space that was most recently Sandcrab Beach Bar. “It’s going to be a place for everyone to hang out. A true island tiki hut on the Boardwalk.”

Brian Goldfarb, hotel executive chef, said the space has been completely redone. From the walls to the Boardwalk, he said.

Goldfarb said the new tiki bar is the best location on the Boardwalk, and the menu will feature island-influenced classics.

“It’s not just going to be a basket of shrimp,” said Goldfarb.

“We want this to be a destination for people,” he said. “It’s perfect for Rehoboth.”

In addition to the hut, there will be a full-service ice cream stand featuring Bridgeville-based Vanderwende Farm Creamery products.

Named after hotel owner Gene Lankford’s beloved pet parrot Kiwi, Hopkins said Kiwi’s Tiki Hut will be open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week. As summer gets busier, around July 1, she said, the plan is to start serving breakfast.

“Everyone is welcome,” said Hopkins.
