Gov. Matt Meyer was sworn in Jan. 21 as 76th governor of Delaware, accompanied by Lt. Gov. Kyle Evans Gay, during an inside celebration on the campus of Delaware State University.
Meyer told the audience at the DeLauder Theatre that he will work with anyone, regardless of party, who is willing to work, and he acknowledged that civility in the Delaware political community is civil. “It’s who we are,” he said.
A former public school teacher, Meyer said he promises to support teachers, educators and students.
“You all have an ally in the governor’s office,” he said.
His other two priorities, housing and healthcare, are human rights, he said.
“We’re not going to rest until every Delawarean has access to safe, stable, affordable housing,” he said.
On healthcare, Meyer acknowledged the possibility of changes under the new Trump administration, but said he is going to work to make healthcare in Delaware affordable, accessible, more reliable and more innovative.
“If Washington moves backwards or downwards, we’re not going with it,” he said. “In Delaware, we move forward.”
Shortly into his speech, Meyer was interrupted by the first of two protestors who spoke in support of Palestine and the ongoing atrocities in Gaza.
In her inaugural speech, Evans Gay said she will work to make Delaware a state for families, and build upon the success of voting rights, securing more investment in childcare and early education, supporting men and women in uniform, and reducing barriers in healthcare.
“I will continue to be that leader because our work is far from done,” she said.
