New Jersey crew crosses bay to win Lewes Cup

A New Jersey skipper and crew made the trip across Delaware Bay and went home with the first-place trophy in the Lewes Cup Class A division during the July 8 distance race sponsored by Lewes Yacht Club.

Mini Max, skippered by Patricia Schultz and Matthew York, represented the Corinthian Yacht Club in Cape May. The J70 is not a newcomer to LYC racing, as an annual top finisher in the Cape-to-Cape Regatta.

Mini Max was followed by two LYC boats, Balance with skipper Richard Beebe, and Legacy with skipper Nick Carter.

Winner of the Class B division was Iris, skippered by Hattie Warwick Smith.

Class A division

1. Mini Max, Patricia Schultz and Matthew York, Corinthian Yacht Club, Cape May, N.J.; 2. Balance, Richard Beebe, skipper, Lewes Yacht Club; 3. Legacy, Nick Carter, skipper, LYC; 4. Leopolis, Askold Sandursky, skipper, Leopolis Sailing Club.

Class B division

1. Iris, Hattie Warwick Smith, skipper, LYC; 2. Delilah, Heath Gehrke, skipper, LYC; 3. Mystery, Richard Tormet, skipper, LYC; 4. Mahal, John Nelson, skipper, LYC; 5. Osprey, T.J. Thomas, skipper, LYC.

Balance, a J105 from Lewes Yacht Club skippered by Richard Beebe, finished in second place in the Class A race.

Legacy, a Beneteau First 40 from Lewes Yacht Club skippered by Nick Carter, sailed to a third-place finish in the Class A race.

Mahal, a Tartan 37 from Lewes Yacht Club skippered by John Nelson, races to a fourth-place finish in the Class B division.

Mystery, a Catalina 30 from Lewes Yacht Club skippered by Richard Tormet, took third-place honors in the Class B division.
