37th RD Dems to meet Jan. 22

Lewes art group to meet Jan. 22

The Lewes Public Art Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the Rollins Center.  The agenda includes continued discussion regarding the committee’s 2025 public art installation.

Lewes BPW slated to meet Jan. 22

The Lewes Board of Public Works will meet at 4 pm., Wednesday, Jan. 22 at city hall. The agenda includes discussion on potential renovation or demolition of the Army Reserve building.

Cape District BOE to meet Jan. 23

The Cape Henlopen School District Board of Education will meet for an open session at 5:15 p.m. on January 23 at Milton Elementary. 

The session will also be streamed on Zoom.

The board will go over a variety of items, including the 2025-26 district calendar, a Puerto Rico trip, major capital projects for the 2025 fiscal year, several board policies and more.

Lewes council to hold workshop Jan. 23

Lewes Mayor and Council will hold a public workshop and special meeting at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 23 at city hall.  

The agenda includes discussion on a request for an historical marker at the Black Harry Spring and proposed development of a city-sponsored historical marker program.

Special Rehoboth meeting set Jan. 23

Rehoboth Beach commissioners have scheduled a special meeting for 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 23. 

The purpose of the meeting is to conduct a joint meeting with the planning commission and representatives with the Building & Licensing Department to figure out who should have final say on site plan approval. It’s an issue that’s been causing problems and raising questions on authority for well over a year now.

The meeting will be conducted in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave.

Dewey budget workshop set Jan. 24

Dewey Beach Town Council will hold a workshop at 3 p.m., Friday, Jan. 24, at the Dewey Beach Lifesaving Station, 1 Dagsworthy St. 

The purpose of the meeting is to review and discuss the fiscal year 2026 budget. Discussion will include presentations by town staff regarding departmental needs.  Commissioners will discuss all aspects of the upcoming fiscal year, including financial policies, expenditures and revenue streams.  For more information, go to townofdeweybeach.gov. 

Henlopen Acres CDP hearing set Jan. 24 

Henlopen Acres commissioners have scheduled a public hearing on the town’s new comprehensive development plan for 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 24. 

A copy of the document is available on the town’s website – henlopenacres.delaware.gov – or at town hall, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Comments may be submitted in writing to planning@henlopenacres.com or during the public hearing.

La Esperanza and Haitian Coalition to unveil report Feb. 1

La Esperanza and the Haitian Coalition of Delaware will unveil the Thriving Newcomers Report at at event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb.1 at the Carter Center auditorium, Room 529, on the Delaware Technical Community College Owens Campus, 21179 College Drive, Georgetown.

A comprehensive report represents a yearlong effort to identify and document the most pressing issues facing newcomer communities in Sussex County. The report shares the problems and opportunities members of these communities experience.

Following a presentation about the report's findings, a panel of community leaders will discuss the report’s conclusions and share ideas to help Sussex County's diverse populations.

“The Thriving Newcomers Report represents the voice and story of our community," said Jennifer Fuqua, co-executive director of La Esperanza. "We're proud to present this resource for the leaders, service providers, and community groups who are working to make Sussex County a more welcoming and supportive place for everyone.”

AAUW scholarship applications due March 28

The American Association of University Women Coastal Georgetown Branch will award $32,500 in scholarship funds this year.

A $2,500 scholarship will go to a woman who will have completed two years at Delaware Tech and will be continuing to a four-year college/university in fall 2025 to complete her degree. AAUW-CG, a 501c3 nonprofit, is a local organization whose mission is to promote gender equity and economic security for women and girls. The $2,500 Heather Ann Worrall Memorial Scholarship is named in memory of a member’s daughter.

AAUW-CG will also award six $5,000 scholarships to graduating senior women attending Cape Henlopen, Sussex Academy, Sussex Central, Sussex Tech or Indian River high school. Four are regular scholarships based on community service, volunteerism and academics; one is need-based, and one is designated for a future educator.

Applications are available at Delaware Tech and online at georgetown-de.aauw.net and scholarships.delawarestudentsuccess.org. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 28.

Contract awarded for Munchy Branch path

The Delaware Department of Transportation has awarded a contract for the second phase of a shared-use path on Munchy Branch Road near Rehoboth Beach. 

Richard E. Pierson Construction Company Inc. was the lowest bidder, submitting an estimate of $3,084,166, which is slightly over the engineer’s estimate of $3,002814. 

The project comprises construction of a 10-foot-wide shared-use pathway along Munchy Branch Road from Field Lane to Wolfe Neck Road, drainage improvements and a mill and overlay of Munchy Branch Road within the project area. 

Milton approves Zombie Fest plans

Milton Town Council unanimously OK’d traffic plans, pending approval by Delaware Department of Transportation, for the annual Zombie Fest event set for Saturday, Oct. 18.

The traffic plan involves closing Union Street from Chandler Street to Federal Street from noon to 10 p.m. to allow for street vendors to set up. Union Street will also be closed from 4 to 9 p.m. from Atlantic Street to Chandler Street for the festival’s culmination, the Zombie Walk. 

Plans for this year’s festival are much the same as last year, with the exception of the children’s bounce houses being relocated from the Magnolia Street parking lot to behind the Milton Theatre house.
