The Peninsula Gallery puts the spotlight on the works of Nancy Richards West for the month of December.
West has been painting professionally since 1971 but has had a passion for art since she could hold a crayon. She studied art at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., where she graduated with high honors for her thesis work in portraiture. As an adult, she continued her studies at Barnstone Studios under the incomparable Myron Barnstone. Under Barnstone’s watchful eye, she studied classical drawing principles and advanced color theory. Both have added strength and surety to her work
West participates in numerous prestigious wildlife and fine arts festivals throughout the East Coast. Her works focus on depicting the quiet beauty of wildlife and nature. Her home and studio are on picturesque Chincoteague Island, Va., the inspiration for many of her paintings.
West works in various mediums, showing her strength as an artist. She typically displays her sumi-e works in the Peninsula Gallery, but this month she has opted to highlight oil and pastel pieces. Her oil works have an immaculate richness to them, using deep hues to bring depth to each painting. Meanwhile, she uses pastels to create whimsical and textual animals, giving each one a special personality.
West has 10 new oil and pastel paintings on display during December. Works can be previewed at peninsula-gallery.com.
