December 14, 2023

The Southern Delaware Orchestra will perform at 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 16, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach.

While some Broadway hits will be revived, the concert will also include seasonal favorites like Humperdinck’s “Prelude to Hansel and Gretel,” selections from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” ballet and a rousing holiday sing-along.

The orchestra has expanded its repertoire and sound by welcoming winds and percussionists to its roster. From its initial roots as a strings-only ensemble, the orchestra’s embrace of these new elements adds a dynamic and vibrant dimension to its performances.

“Adding winds and percussion, and becoming a full orchestra has been part of our mission since we started. This opens up repertoire and a sound that winds or strings alone cannot provide to an audience,” said Steve Greifer, board president. “It’s amazing that we have reached this point so quickly! The energy and excitement at rehearsals has been inspiring. Most of our new members are getting to play with strings for the first time in a long time, if at all, and the strings are so happy with the sound of a full orchestra, and meeting and playing with our new musicians.”

In addition to this expansion, the orchestra traveled to the Grand Opera House in Wilmington Nov. 29 for its first concert outside Sussex County.

The orchestra, now a full blend of musicians from all four instrument families, boasts a diverse and talented membership with performers hailing from as far as Germany and as close as Milton, united by a shared love for playing music and a common goal of bringing orchestral music to southern Delaware.
