June 6, 2024

The 38th annual Statewide Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics made its way to the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand June 5 for a ceremony and short run to Grove Park.

The run began in Fenwick Island and made its way north to Rehoboth Beach for the 7 p.m. ceremony. A separate run and ceremony were held upstate.

On June 6, the downstate run departed from Delmar Police Department, while another left the Georgetown Circle before uniting in Harrington. Together, the participants ran together to Dover, where a ceremony was held on the Legislative Mall. Also June 6, a run departed from the Middletown Police Department and arrived for the ceremony in Dover.

The event continues Friday, June 7, when the torch will leave the Newark Shopping Center at 4:15 p.m., and culminates with a final leg into the University of Delaware Bob Carpenter Center for the official opening of the 2024 Special Olympics Delaware Summer Games ceremony at about 5 p.m.

In its history, Delaware Law Enforcement for Special Olympics has raised more than $11 million to support Special Olympics Delaware’s year-round program of quality sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. A family of enthusiastic volunteers makes this program possible for the thousands of athletes who compete in Special Olympics Delaware. The organization builds sports skills, confidence, strength, motivation and self-esteem not just for the athletes, but also for everyone involved.
