Stella Mae Hickman, powerful woman of God

January 7, 2020

Stella Mae Hickman was born in Accomack, Va., Jan. 25, 1937, to the late John Bailey and Rosie Bagwell. She attended the Accomack Public School District and years later was united in marriage to Lester Hickman Jr. Aug. 11, 1952. Stella departed this life Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019, at Select Specialty Hospital in Wilmington.

She is preceded in death by her siblings, sisters Essie Bailey and Romance Toppings; brothers, David Bailey, Robert Toppings, Francis Bailey, Roosevelt Bailey, Milton Toppings and George Toppings; as well as a daughter, Regina Bailey and a son, George W. Hickman.

In her many years of employment, Stella was a domestic housekeeper for Randall and Betty Godwin at Nomad Village in Bethany Beach for more than 30 years. Her duties also included being a personal nanny to the Godwins’ children, Marty and Mandy.

Stella was a dedicated mother and wife first and foremost, making her the pillar of the Hickman household. She loved to express her love for people, regardless who they were. She was filled with kindness, generosity, and compassion that led her to raising children who were not her own. Her doors were open to anyone not having a place to lay their head. Stella is a “Legendary Queen.”

For all who knew Stella, it was no secret that she had a passion for having yard sales, preparing gifts on Christmas, and fixing Easter baskets for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and anyone else who showed up on her doorstep during those two holidays. Last but not least, she loved to cook and her specialty was Sweet Potato Pie.

Stella’s gift from God was praying for those in need, reassuring those in doubt of the love of God. She was a very powerful woman of God! She fought a courageous battle with her sickness, but nevertheless, she completed her task here on earth and now rests in the bosom of her Heavenly Father.

Stella leaves to cherish her loving memories husband Lester Hickman Jr. “Junior” of Dagsboro; her children Lester Hickman Jr. of Dagsboro, Cleveland Hickman of Dover, Stevie Hickman of Millsboro, Ricky Hickman of Millsboro, Rosetta Jones of Dover, Joyce Ann Dale of Frankford, Gloria Hickman of Millsboro, Carolyn Phillips of Millsboro, Sheryl Hickman of Dover, and Sandra Hickman-Foreman of Frankford; godson Marty Godwin of Rehoboth Beach, and a host of grandchildren, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and friends.
