Just in time for the height of the summer season, Uncle David’s Ice Cream on Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach is set to open Friday, June 28.

Uncle David’s Ice Cream, which will feature Hopkins Farm Creamery ice cream, is a business created for individuals with Down syndrome. The business is named after David Samson, who served as the original inspiration for the Boardwalk Buddy Walk, which was created in 2006. Samson, who died in 2018, is the brother-in-law and brother of Boardwalk Buddy Walk founders Dennis and Sharonlee Diehl.

Boardwalk Buddy Walk Executive Director Jim Watson, whose son Connor Watson will be an employee at the shop, said the hours of operation for the business to begin will be noon to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Beyond that, the market will be tested to see if there are additional hours needed, he said.

The shop is located at 237 Rehoboth Ave. in a space that used to be Just Comfort Shoes, which is owned by the Diehls. The shoe store is still there, but the floor space has been cut in half to make way for the ice cream shop.

“It’s both,” said Dennis, with a laugh when asked if the shoe store is now more crowded or if the space is being used more efficiently.

In addition to the new ice cream shop, Uncle David’s Ice Cream also offers mobile services. For more information on the shop and mobile services, go to uncledavidsicecream.com, call 302-493-6001 or email info@uncledavidsicecream.com.

The annual Boardwalk Buddy Walk is scheduled to take place at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, on the Boardwalk. For more information on the walk, go to ds-stride.org/boardwalkbuddywalk or email info@boardwalkbuddywalk.com.
