Mariner boys’ basketball dominates Millsboro Middle

Vikings girls fall to Knights
December 7, 2018

The Mariner boys’ basketball squad won its first game of the season with a convincing 49-27 win over Millsboro Middle on Dec. 5 in Milton.

Eighth-grader Nick Cox led the Vikings with 15 points, while Dylan Henry scored seven, Cody Trivits added six and Trey Leggins and Kai Bickham garnered five. Bruce Mosley and Maurki James added four, while Andrew Criswell and David Maker scored two and one point, respectively.

“We’ve still got a lot of work to do,” said Mariner coach Terry Hazzard. “Millsboro always plays tough against us. They are a good team that’s well coached. With our size, we just dominated them on the boards. We’re big, but we still have got some more work to put in. It’s middle school and it takes some time, and I keep pushing them and hopefully we find our stride.”

The Vikings girls’ team didn’t fare as well, as they fell to the Knights 36-15 in the first game of the afternoon. Sara Naar scored six points for the home team, while Anna Fantoli added four, Morgan Newcomb tallied three and Jessica Ashley scored two.

“We are really inexperienced,” said Vikings coach Katie Tingle. “Only two starters have played basketball before, so we can only grow from there. We have a lot of athletes, and I know they are going to get a lot better. We’ve got to hit the big person coming through. When we did that, we were successful. They’ll get it.”

Millsboro was led by Lenijah Garrison with 16 points. McKenna Boyle scored nine and Selaya Garrison tallied four.

The Vikings travel to Laurel on Monday, Dec. 10 to face the Bulldogs.
