Cape baseball looks to 2022 season with 10 seniors

Vikings aim to improve on 14-6 record
March 10, 2022

Cape head coach Ben Evick will be senior-heavy this season on Chris Short Field, as 10 players from the Class of 2022 look to improve on the 14-6 campaign of 2021. The Vikings fell to Sallies 6-1 in the second round of the DIAA tournament last May.

“We’re really excited about this season,” Evick said. “We have 14 returners to varsity lineup this season, including 10 seniors. Strength coach Jay Conn helped our guys make big gains in the weight room this off-season, and it’s already showing on the field. Offensively, we have some guys that can drive the ball to all fields. Our pitching staff will be led by senior Josh Reinhold, and we have a deep staff behind him that will give us a lot of quality innings. Defensively, we have smart players that are athletic and have experience.”

“I am super excited for this season,” said Reinhold, who went 2-0 on the mound last season. “We have 10 seniors this year with a bunch of leadership and experience. Our team is not looking at any particular team as a big opponent, for we will not take any team lightly. This is my last chance to be part of Cape Henlopen High School history, and I want to make the most of it.”

Evick welcomes Drew Johnson and Griffin Kammerer back as assistants this year. Former coach Dave Vitella has retired from coaching and is vacationing in Hawaii.

Evick believes that Sussex Tech will be a force to deal with in the Henlopen North while Delaware Military Academy, Sallies and Saint Mark’s will be tough in statewide play.

Cape will host Woodbridge in a scrimmage at 3:30 p.m., Friday, March 11. The Vikings will open their 2022 season with Caesar Rodney Thursday, March 24, at Chris Short Field.
