More than 20 arts patrons from Sussex County have loaned paintings by the late local artist Tom Wilson for an exhibit that continues through Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Biggs Museum of American Art in Dover.
The Tom Wilson: Super-Realist/Surrealist exhibition spotlights the artist’s Hopper-like masterpieces that normally grace the homes of many collectors around the area.
Wilson regularly exhibited his art at Back Porch Café in Rehoboth Beach, where his partner, the late Leo Medicsh, was executive chef. His showings led to the tradition of fine dining establishments in Rehoboth and Lewes doubling as art galleries.
Keith Fitzgerald, former owner of the Back Porch, lent six pieces. “He was the most charismatic artist and human being I’ve ever known,” said Fitzgerald. “Our six originals are our pride and joy, but seeing them curated with the other 44 pieces from the region is gob-smacking. He and Leo would be so touched at the outpouring of love for his work, and them as a couple. They’d be thrilled at the reunion atmosphere of all their friends and patrons.”
The Back Porch is offering a Tom Wilson cocktail during the run of the exhibition. And along with Bad Hair Day? Salon, the Back Porch is offering patrons guest passes to see the show in Dover. Likewise, CAMP Rehoboth is offering free passes to members in celebration of one of the most notable LGBTQ artists to paint and exhibit in the Rehoboth Beach area.
The Biggs Museum is located at 406 Federal St., in historic downtown Dover. Standard admission is $10, with discounts for seniors and free admission for children and active duty military families. The museum is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday to Sunday. To learn more, go to biggsmuseum.org.
